Dining in Bondi Junction Westfield’s Level 5 food court is still one of Sydney’s best food court experiences. If you come at night, it’s mostly deserted; so take your pick of the comfy, silver swivel chairs to lap up the uninterrupted million-buck view, and spare a thought about what the poor folk are doing. Enhance your cheap date with a banquet from the latest outpost of New Shanghai. Sadly it’s not as picturesque as the theatrical Shanghai street-scape of their Chatswood store, but you can still watch precision pleating while you wait. Whilst Chatswood seems squarely aimed at the local Chinese community, the Bondi store has toned down the heat a little, and introduced some accessible, home-style dumplings like Beef and Coriander ($10.80/12 piece). If you’re new to Northern Chinese cuisine, you may also like the Shredded Pork ($20.80/8 pieces) drizzled with Peking sauce and sandwiched with shallots and cucumber between fluffy layers of steamed corn bread. A tasty Shallot Pancake ($5.80/2 pieces) provides nice contrast; but do also try a dish of Shepherd’s Purse and Pork Wonton ($9.80/10 pieces). The combination of sesame butter and chilli oil is a little unusual for a Western palate, but it makes an exciting change from their plainer plates of carefully pleated joy.
