From Poles drinking Portuguese rosé to lesbians with long necks, this popular new entry on King Street is dishing up hearty serves of accessible modern Polish food to all comers. Their current menu gives a nod to seasonality, without losing the perennial Polish favourites including a good potato pancake Placki ($12.90) and excellent house-made Pierogi ($11.90/$17.90). The dumplings come in three flavours, topped with a silky wild mushroom sauce. For me it was a dead heat between the roast Pork Dumplings ($11.90/$17.90) and the Sauerkraut and Mushroom Dumplings ($11.90/$17.90). Pork is also the hero of the robust mains. I was most taken with Žeberka ($24.90), a heaped plate of achingly tender pork ribs cooked in goulash on a mound of mashed potatoes and sauerkraut. My dining companion’s eyes boggled at the size of his Golonka ($29.90) –certainly one of the meatiest pork knuckles in town – accompanied by a vibrant house-made horseradish. Supplement your BYO with a refreshing jug of Kompot ($8/jug) a non-alcoholic sour cherry cordial. Cherries are also the star of the dessert menu, stuffed inside more toothsome dumplings called Pierogi z Wisniami ($12). Roll out the door well sated – as owner Angelika Kapys puts it: “We Polish, we love to have a lot of food.
