MOVIE: THE WOLFMAN

MOVIE: THE WOLFMAN

Horror movies in modern cinema scare us for entirely different reasons than they used to. The gore-packed method of achieving cheap thrills has resulted in horror movies devolving from their roots. However, in the dark recesses of directors’ minds, the true monsters of our time watch us, just waiting for the right chance. The Wolfman shows the return of one such monster, the original werewolf, to the horror genre. Following an altered story to the first Wolf Man (1941), this modern rendition of the werewolf legend is still brutal and hauntingly sad. The Wolfman observes the same relationship between each character’s humanity and their deeper, animalistic urges, whilst utilising a similar style of performance and aesthetics seen in the original period movie. Claws out, teeth bared, this movie is saying something … even if it’s only a long howl under the full moon. (AEB)
