THE TRANSIENTS – CROSSFADES

It’s a catch 22 to include a guest vocalist on your first EP. If they’re great, they’ll add something snappy to your showpiece. But then again if they snap too much, they’ll outshine original members and your material – especially on an EP where there’s not much shining time. This occurs on Perth band The Transients’ first outing. It starts off Presets-y with Robert Maszkowski’s accented vocals sounding a little like Borat at times (thanks Richard Kingsmill), but the hard-working production of the lead single One Day shows off their talents. And then fellow Aussie Jasmine Yee (Halogen, Pendulum) guest stars her seductive, classy voice on Can’t Let You Be Lonely and the potential greatness of The Transients is unleashed. With its driving 90s club beat, bumblebee synth and Yee’s perfect melodic accompaniment, it brings the record to a high point far, far away from the commercial angle they were possibly aiming for with the first two tracks. The closer Echo is a restrained instrumental with whip-smart synths and, together with the Yee-fronted tune, is an exciting preface to The Transients’ future if they steer clear of commercial electro and bring Yee back into the fold.
