Walk the talk for cancer

Walk the talk for cancer

Waverley’s mayor and deputy mayor are among those who will be walking the talk on cancer fundraising on May 16 and 17.

Mayor Sally Betts and deputy Kerryn Sloan will head relay teams, the Mayoral Mavericks and the Sloan Rangers, in Relay For Life a walking weekend in Centennial Park from 10 am Saturday to 10 am Sunday. Mayor Betts already has a team of 12 – the limit is 15.

“I’m very excited about the relay. I have many friends who’ve been affected by cancer,” Mayor Betts said. “The idea is that your team will walk for 12 hours taking turns. We’re allowed to camp in Centennial Park for the night and in the morning we will have the survivors walk. In the evening there will be a candlelight ceremony for lost friends at dusk. Come and sponsor us and walk with us, even for half an hour.”

Cr Sloan, a cancer survivor, will participate in the survivors’ team as well as heading her own group.

Waverley is one of three eastern suburbs councils participating in the event. The Cancer Council has congratulated Randwick Council Mayor Bruce Notley-Smith for driving the initiative, which also has the support of Woollahra Mayor Andrew Petrie.
