THIN LIZZY – STILL DANGEROUS – Live in 1977

Long lost live recordings are becoming something of a trend these days, making for fancy re-issues of bootlegs and unreleased double albums of extended jams. This is an exciting thing when there’s some historic interest to the occasion, such as The Last Waltz’s grandiose farewelling, or Neil Young’s Live at Massey Hall providing a window into the early stages of an exploding influential career. But here with the charming but laddish Thin Lizzy, we’ve just got a concert. The sound quality is very good, and fans of the band’s soccer anthems Soldiers of Fortune and Boys Are Back In Town will get a kick out of hearing them slog it out to a stadium crowd, all skinny leathers and big hair. These songs come from an era of joyous glam-rock of a very British kind, spearheaded by contemporaries T-Rex and Bowie, so it’s hard to feel much more than a little bit of fun from these simplistic rocking ditties. Respect must go to the charisma of Phil Lynott, whose husky, chortling pipes give this rock band its rocket fuel. But purely as a listening experience, this concert is more of a historical curiosity than an inspired artwork.
