Best Antique Shop (pre 1950): Martyn Cook Antiques *READER PICK*
Investing in antiques is ideally an experience to cherish and Martyn Cook and his team of experts make shopping for those signature pieces truly enjoyable. Every time I set foot inside their store I feel like I’ve been whisked off to a movie set straight off Dangerous Liaisons or Jane Eyre and that in itself is testimony to the fact that they stock only the best. Actually Cook specialises in late 18th and 19th century goods, so on my current shopping-list are their Late George III / Regency period mahogany settee and ebonised writing table’unless someone beats me to them. Serious collectors and those ‘just browsing’ are all welcome to visit their store but be warned ‘ hours slip by unnoticed amongst these treasures.

Best Deli: The Deli, Potts Point
Quality food for busy people – if you’re cash rich and time poor (or lacking in inspiration), then this is the place for you. The food all looks home made, so if you want to fool a potential suitor into thinking you’re a domestic goddess, why not plan your menu here. Being a restaurant reviewer, my idea of a great night out has adjusted a little, and I can’t think of anything better than packing a picnic-in-the-lounge room from the laden shelves and groaning counter of this gorgeous little deli.

Best Place to Get Waxed: V Beauty *READER PICK*
Vera Tanovic is the queen of wax. Her gleaming white salon will attest to how finicky she is about cleanliness and perfection, so there’ll be no need to get out the tweezers when you get home from your Brazilian. To a product queen like myself, I appreciate that she buys (and uses in the salon) a quality range like Dermalogica ‘ I wouldn’t use anything else. While she concentrates on your short and curlies, feel free to regale her with tales of your mere male’s latest brilliance. It’s quid pro quo with tales of her own, and she has surprisingly down-to-earth advice. Have a one-hour treatment, and save on the need for a therapist. Don’t be afraid to ask for the landing strip of your dreams, she’s heard everything, and has even fashioned a Christmas tree. Ho. Ho. Ho.

Best Men’s Haircut under $30: Grand Royal Barbers *READER PICK*
Henry Lawson deified the inner city barber thus in his epic poem The Man from Ironbark: ‘The barber man was quick and flash as barbers mostly are…he wore a strike-your-dandy sash; he smoked a huge cigar’. Barbers may mostly work smoke-free these days but the feeling of a good old fashioned shave and a haircut in a retro-style salon is something I’m told is hard to beat. The Grand Royal Barbers in the CBD welcome walk-in customers and can provide a ‘cut-throat razor’ traditional shave upon request. The haircuts are neat, slick, fast and affordable ‘ the Grand Royal Barber’s ‘clipper cut and hot towel’ price is only $25. Check it out, but keep it under your hat so you’ll always get a seat.

Best Sporting Goods Store:
Rebel Sports *READER PICK*
Hype and cheesy advertising had put me off setting foot inside Rebel for months until, in search of a yoga mat, I gingerly opened the door and ventured in. What I thought would be a sickening mélange of badly-designed workout clothes and annoying staff turned out to be an oasis of sports essentials and assistants full of charm. Hunks representing every nation fetched every kind of yoga mat imaginable, not content to rest until Her Highness had tested out each one, smiling all the while and, in the case of one particularly handsome jock, even cracking a few very witty jokes. Tee hee. The mat turned out to be deluxe and the pricing, perfect. I even spotted some truly sexy clobber for the gym’ so I’ll be back. Double thumbs up Rebel ‘ you’ve earned this award!

Best Place to get Tattooed: Sleevemasters *READER PICK*
When my friend John casually walked in the door one evening with a gorgeous new tattoo on his shoulder, I couldn’t believe how chilled out he was about this new addition. Best Hotel (Budget): Atlas Serviced Apartments *READER PICK*
My partner and I live in one of those fabulous converted warehouses. We love it, except when we have relatives from out of Sydney come to stay. That’s when the sheen can rub off open plan living. Since we pay a lot of cash to live with an empty void around us, we can’t really afford to put up family in five star luxury; and well you can’t stick them in a Formula One either. The Atlas Serviced Apartments however make them think you care, without breaking the budget, plus they can take themselves to Darling Harbour, Cockle Bay, The Entertainment Centre, China Town and an expansive network of commercial enterprise in Sydney’s CBD and meet you for lunch, saving you the added torture of getting up early on your day off.

Best Hotel (Midrange): Cambridge Hotel *EDITORIAL PICK*
Your best friend lives in Penrith, so it’s a long drive home, and she’s boring when she doesn’t drink, but you’re not exactly going to end up in bed together (she’s not that kind of friend). It’s times like these that you need a hotel a hop, skip and a jump from club land, that’s clean, has style, and won’t break the budget. From the number of votes, I was about the only person not let in on the secret. The Cambridge Hotel is the perfect place to stay in your own city, and not clean up the mess.
