The annual Glebe Art Show is on again, exhibiting works by local artists, living and working in the CBD, Glebe and Leichhardt.
Well into its 11th year, founder and organiser of the event, Robin Lawrence says the exhibition’s popularity has grown each year with the quality of artworks increasing to an incredible degree.
Over 200 works were submitted last year to the extent that entries have been restricted to only two of the event’s categories this year.
There are prizes for different categories including, Non-Acquisitive Open Art, Photography, Works on Paper, Youth and People’s Choice. Winners are rewarded with a sum of money donated by the show’s sponsors. Artists also have the opportunity to sell their works.
Patrick Blake, a winner of the Open Prize in 2005, said the show gives locals an opportunity to express themselves.
‘It [Glebe Art Show] gives colour to the area, gives a bit of character or what people might call culture’it does give another aspect to people’s perception of the area.’
Mr Blake said that, unlike other art shows where an artist’s name determines whether their artwork is hung up or not, the Glebe Art Show is based on merit and thus encourages diversity.
According to Mrs Lawrence, the event is extremely well attended and expects that it will attract several hundreds of people a day.
The annual Glebe Art Show opens on Friday 4 July from 6pm and will run until Sunday 13 July at Glebe Library and Benledi House on 186 Glebe Point Road. Opening hours are 11am to 5pm.
