October is rammed with events to invigorate the most jaded of palates. My interest has been piqued by Omnivore running from the 3rd-6th October.
With bagels the new black in Sydney, my Eastern Suburbs dining expert Alex Harmon and I are at odds. While she’s a fan of Brooklyn Hide, I rate the original Darlo Laundry pop-up Brooklyn Boy Bagels better at boiled and baked breads.
On my last visit to Orange I fell in love with De Salis Wild Chardonnay so I was stoked to hear they’re one of the twenty-two wineries making the trip to the big smoke for Taste Orange @ Sydney on Wednesday 21st and Thursday 22nd August. If you work in the CBD you can be naughty and nip out to Martin Place to sample the bounty of this wonderful wine region during your lunch break (11.30am-2.30pm).
The Morrison has declared August oyster month, and with them doing a $1 oyster shucking happy hour every day between 6pm and 7pm, who’s going to argue?
"We believe in good karma - doing things well then things will come back," says Jessie Xiao at the launch of her latest venture, Umi Sushi Express. That’s why the launch of this Event Cinemas George Street sushi train ended with an exclusive charity screening of Man of Steel with proceeds supporting the National Breast Cancer Foundation & Sydney Children's Hospital.
Birthdays are a time to pause and reflect on your journey so far, and to celebrate ten years in hospitality the Shangri-La Hotel Sydney is inviting everyone to do just that. By sharing your favourite hotel memory on their Facebook page, you could win one of ten luxurious weekends away.
It’s not often a food festival offers a burger lover like me the chance to wrap my mitts around different burgers from sixty-nine different eateries, but that’s how Visa Wellington on a Plate rolls. It’s taking over Wellington, New Zealand (just a three hour hop across the ditch) from the 9th -25th August.
Last Monday morning I got up with the sparrows and headed to the launch of National Bacon Week (12–19 May). I had good reason - the smiling 4Fourteen, all-girl kitchen brigade lead by Head Chef Carla Jones was dishing up Australia’s most expensive bacon and egg roll - and I had to try one!
After chowing down on Chef Paul Cooper’s bespoke five-course menu all created out of the one Melanda Park heritage breed pig, my interest in all things pork has been piqued. It’s the right season for it too, what with a bumper crop of winter born pigs hitting the market, chefs and butchers all over Sydney are taking part in Australian PorkFest.
Watching Haute Cuisine recently, I stepped out of the cinema with a strong yearning for truffles. It reminded me how powerfully evocative good food movies can be. This year Sydney Film Festival ups the ante even further with a Gourmet Cinema experience, combining Red Obsession - a compelling documentary about high-end Bordeaux wine - with a bespoke dinner by celebrity chef Luke Mangan at Glass Brasserie.
