RIFF RAFF – Oscar Party

RIFF RAFF – Oscar Party

By Mark Morellini

There’s something inexplicably exciting in attending the Oscar’s Party at the Hoyts Lux Broadway each year! Is it because most of the invitees are dressed in their best Hollywood glamour attire which heightens the atmosphere of elegance? Or is it perhaps that watching the awards presentation on the silver screen while sipping on endless glasses of bubblies and quietly munching on mountains of canapés offers a feeling of grandeur?

But one thing is for certain – the passion which everybody around you shares for motion pictures is empowering!

As each year, there were quite a few surprises! Parasite receiving the nod for Best Picture and Best International Feature Film raised a few eyebrows. As if that wasn’t substantial enough, the film also collected awards for Best Director (Bong Joon-ho) and Best Original Screenplay.

Renee Zellweger winning the Best Actress Award for her magnificent performance in Judy was a no-brainer, as was Best Actor recipient Joaquin Phoenix for his powerful performance in Joker.

Each year there seem to be more Netflix produced films which are nominated for Oscar Awards. Marriage Story (for which Laura Dern scored the Best Supporting Actress), The Two Popes and The Irishman were also amongst the nominees.

Should films that go straight to Netflix or don’t receive a conventional theatrical release qualify for Oscar nominations? Food for thought……
