1.5 Million for the largest private collection of Aboriginal art

The largest private collection of Aboriginal artwork in Australia is for sale at 1.5 million dollars.

The collection is looking for benefactors or buyers after the art was displaced when the owner of the collection was controversially eviction from Wilson St in Darlington last year.

A meeting will be held next week between luminaries who spoke at the collection’s promotion earlier this month to brainstorm ideas for the future placement of the collection.

Mr Syron’s partner and artist, Elaine Syron, said they were going to lobby the State government for support and was positive the collection would find a home without being separated.

“I feel it’s going to happen. We might have some good news next . . . We are taking it straight to Premier O’Farrell’s office.”

She said the meeting held earlier this month including, previous minister for Ingenious Affairs Philip Ruddock, retired judge Michael Kirby, Waverly Council Mayor Sally Betts and Aboriginal Pastor Ray Minniecon, was extremely positive and many luminaries present pledged their support.

The collection, which has been praised for its truthful and unique account of Australian history, and includes more than 2000 Aboriginal artworks, can be bought outright for $1.5 million dollars.

The Syron’s are also considering receiving offers or donations for individual artworks, the price of which can be found online.

The Syron’s property on Magnetic Island, which has its interior painted by Mr Syron, is also up for sale at around $750 000.
