Ian Cairns – Kanga

Ian Cairns – Kanga

Former champion surfer Ian Cairns will be hosted by The Bucket List at Bondi Beach tomorrow to launch his book KANGA and answer any questions on surf-related issues.

If you are unsure of who this surfing legend is, he is regarded as one of Australia’s best big wave riders, taking on huge waves on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii without fear. During his competitive career, Kanga won seven major events and went on to be regarded as one of the world’s most astute surf coaches, coaching Americans to three gold medals in world title competitions and many more individual championships.

In the 1970s, Kanga along with fellow Aussie Peter Townend devised the rating and scoring system for surfing events and formed the National Scholastic Surfing Association. In 1983, he became the first director of the Association Of Surfing Professionals and is now involved in shark mitigation research programmes in the US.

The book features his sports biography, adventure and surf history all wrapped up into two volumes, in which he tells the story of his dreams becoming reality.

“The Ian Cairns story is one that needs to be told. All the obstacles he overcame, the heavy things he went through and the stuff he achieved. He’s a legend in our sport!” – Tom Curren (World Champion).
