In Between Two

Two trailblazing stars of the Australian music scene, Joelistics and James Mangohig, take to the stage for a vibrant, contemporary exploration into what it means to grow up Asian in Australia.

The critically acclaimed production is written, composed and performed by the two men themselves. The pair tell their separate but parallel stories of growing up half-Asian in Australia and thus feeling trapped between two cultural worlds.

From a nightclub-owning Grandma in an open marriage to globetrotting parents with a political streak, the pair lovingly paint a canvas filled with failed proposals and religious scriptures, casual racism and empowerment through music. Their sharp and provocative hip-hop, rap and instrumental music is combined with compelling storytelling and projected image, to explore the forces that have helped shape their way.

When speaking about the show director Suzanne Chaundry said, What has struck me most in the discussion around the development of this work is that this is an Australian story so far away from any other Australian story I’ve seen on our stages, and is a true reflection of the multitude of diverse histories that make up our country in the 21st Century.”
