It would help to consult the history books/websites and get familiar with the story of Mary Stuart and Elizabeth Tudor and the jostle for the English throne – but don’t get too attached to the historical facts because this film doesn’t.

Knowing the details, however, will help you navigate a complex plot with a lot of characters and twists. In essence, that’s the downfall of the film – it tries to include too much information, at the expense of character development and story.

Saoirse Ronan is a strong, charismatic Mary, who ascends to the throne of Scotland while still in her teens and to the chagrin of the all-male regents who had been temporarily in charge. Mary also feels entitled by birthright to the English throne, currently occupied by Elizabeth I, played with exceptional depth and nuance – but with much too little screen time – by Margot Robbie. Had it focused equally on the two queens and their rivalry, it would have been a better film. That said, there is still a lot to enjoy: incredible scenery, top-notch performances, and an engaging plot despite its flaws.
