Just the title Unspoken Words evokes memories of sitting round a campfire telling stories to enrich lives and develop a sense of community. There are many ways, however, to tell a story. From September 7 to 17 as part of The Newtown Festival there will be performances, installations, workshops and discussions concerning the art of storytelling in abundance.

Unspoken Words will be bringing people together to share their stories in a safe space. The festival’s theme for 2018 is health and self-care. Imagine writing short poems to each other on blank cards handed out by the organisers whilst drinking your coffee (Corelli’s Cafe Newtown) or standing at a story listening booth on King Street. What about the same story told from three different perspectives at the same event and each one recorded for playback?

“Through community consultation the idea is to bring people together through stories” says director Emma Rose. Will Roach, the manager for Lifeline, will be holding workshops on positive masculinity at Newtown Neighbourhood Centre throughout the festival too. Even The Imperial Hotel get’s a look in with performance poetry on Sep 9 and the closing celebration on Sep 16.

Donations can be made to the crowdfunding campaign. All donations of $20 and over get a ticket to a festival session of their choosing, Performances are AUSLAN-interpreted.
