Inspired by a real game of Monopoly between the cast and crew of The Shape of Things, award-winning playwright Steven Hopley has written Monopoly, a new comedy perfect for every millennial who’s too focused on their smashed avocado toast.
Examining the struggle that is Sydney’s property market, the play focuses on a game of monopoly between five friends that turns dramatic at the suggestion of playing with real money.
“The idea of money and real estate is very on-the-moment. It’s a nightmare for a young person living in Sydney,” says playwright and co-producer, Steven Hopley. “Even everybody in the cast and crew has had issues with real estate themselves.”
In an interesting twist, the play will be performed across the Inner West, North Shore, South West and Eastern Suburbs, turning the spaces into a real life game of monopoly.
“I hope anyone who’s ever played a game of Monopoly or another board game with friends will find it funny,” says Hopley. “It’s about the haves and the have nots. Come and barrack for your team!”
