Between The Streetlight And The Moon, by celebrated playwright Melita Rowston, digs deep and is full of layers of meaning as it explores what it is to be human and our relationships with each other. It’s a beautiful play about art, love and our need for recognition and creativity.

It’s a sad fact that in Australia we don’t recognise our artists, actors, writers, musicians and painters, so artists often feel drawn to Europe to be appreciated and gain recognition.

Zadie (Lucy Miller) is an academic on a search to write a book about two dead artists, Eduoard Manet, the Father of Impressionism and famous impressionist painter, Berthe Morisot. She moves to Paris on an artistic journey into 19th Century impressionist art, trying to find facts from the past about a supposed love affair between the two artists. It’s a lovely mixture between a mystery and a search of discovery, as she travels through old letters, manuscripts, visits art galleries and different historical places in Europe to find out the truth about this potential affair, piecing together what there might have been between them. There’s a lot of comedy and pathos, romance and friendship.

“The settings are romantic, we spend a lot of time discussing the work of the artists during which their works will be projected so the audience will see that work. We have a musician working with us that will help create another dimension other than the material world, through a strong original musical score. It’s a female driven story about female friendships and what drives them. Women are going to love seeing themselves represented in lead roles. It’s an intelligent piece of writing,” explained Miller.
