The Animal Condition

Animal welfare has, in recent years, shifted from a fringe issue to nationwide debate. Partly responsible for that shift is 2014 documentary The Animal Condition from director Michael Dahlstrom, which is scheduled for nationwide cinema release this September.

Four friends embark on a mission to uncover the truth on animal welfare issues like chicken farming, sow stalls and live cattle exports. The film features interviews from industry heavyweights, government ministers, and animal activists who all come at the issue from a different angle but aren’t able to offer any real solutions to the problems faced.

While at times hard to swallow, the footage is essential viewing for any Australian who thinks the food supply chain begins in the meat aisle at the grocery store. (CB)
