Spin Out

There’s a lot you can do with 90 minutes: you can pick out the scum from around your toenails, you can tidy your sock drawer, you can try again to fill out your census form – or you can go and see Spin Out… but ONLY if the other options aren’t available.

This new Australian film is a Tim Ferguson imprint: he co-wrote the script with Edwina Exton and co-directed with Marc Gracie. His wacky, derisive humour is all over it, but it lacks his sharper, introspective wit.

The setting, a ute rally and B&S Ball in the country, is like flies to a rotting kangaroo when it comes to attracting cliches. To its credit, the film does include some interesting characters, however the cast is too crowded to fully develop any. Ironically, the least interesting people are the leads, Billy (Xavier Samuel) and Lucy (Morgan Griffin), whose story arc has the scope of an instant coffee ad.

As for the plot – it must have fallen off the back of a ute on the way to filming. (RB)
