Before Cirque du Soleil, there was Circus Oz––a playful, colourful, animal-free innovation that focussed on the human form. This Summer, after two years of touring, they are bringing their unique collection of characters and clowns to Sydney in But Wait… There’s More.

Unicyclists April Dawson and Kyle Raftery are two of 12 artists who will twirl, twist and spin to the sound of live instruments surrounded by an illuminated, interactive, inflatable set.

Music plays a large role in Circus Oz, with the band constantly present on stage. April feels that “there is something really special and unique to perform to a live band”. But it can also cause some nervous moments when the unicycle and instrumentalists are in perilous proximity.

Kyle describes their duo act as “acrobatics on a unicycle” and says that it gives him an opportunity to use “all his training in strength and acrobatics”. Together the pair produce an astounding spectacle which reinvents the art form.

Circus Oz is a collaborative effort. Kyle and April warmly support their co-stars: “amazing”  acrobats who become computer game characters; Olivia Porter, who “has crafted a completely new way of juggling” and ring mistress Candy Bowers, a  hip hop wordsmith who composes rhymes and drops beats as the show progresses.

This is an intimate affair with attractions that will delight everyone from grandparents to children. A unique opportunity to see circus in a big top setting, it will enchant, thrill and entice leaving the visitor yearning for more. (LR)
