Virtuous Decadence

Virtuous Decadence

A striking and eerily glamorous photographic exhibition has overtaken the Gaffa Gallery.

Virtuous Decadence draws inspiration from mythologies throughout history. It takes a fresh perspective to the concept of The Seven Deadly Sins and plays upon conventional models of femininity and beauty.

The scrupulous work of photographer and creative director, Nancy Trieu (NAT Photography), unveils the marvellous execution of her images.

At first glance, the strong staging and highly developed use of studio lighting gives the images an ethereal effect. On closer inspection, the complex situations and emotive experience of the photographs emerge and the viewer is left to decipher them.

On February 19th, the opening night saw a mass of spectators cluttered into the small gallery. The striking large-scale photographs looming over the space and the waif-like models from the shoot paced the room in full costume and make-up. It was though they had stepped straight out of the framed images on the walls.

Trieu was delighted with the outcome and expressed great gratitude for all involved with the shoot. She also elaborated on her inspirations: “We’ve seen a lot of (takes on) ‘seven sins’ that have been done before but we wanted to challenge that concept… we feel that everyone has their style, but we wanted to challenge ourselves to give it a different level.” (AM)

Until March 7, Gaffa Gallery, 281 Clarence Street, Sydney, free.
