Actions for Tomorrow- Yangjiang Group

Politically potent and visually provocative, Actions for Tomorrow by the Yangjiang Group is an exhibition remarkable for its innovative look at modern society.

The first floor of the 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art has been transformed into a bizarre boutique. Internationally branded clothes, dripping with dried wax, hang on racks surrounded by sales pitches in Chinese and English. The bright lettering on a black background encompasses slogans such as , ‘suicide after sale’ and ‘expropriation’. The installation, Final Days (2015) is a unique look at the decadence of commercialism.

Upstairs the social commentary continues with a field of sodden, shredded, paper which was gathered after a football match .Painted on the remnants is the whole of Das Kapital in Chinese calligraphy. It is flanked by a huge mural stating ‘God is dead’, ‘long live the RMBI.’

These works are intellectually and aesthetically interesting and are shining beacons of individual thought in a world that values conformity. (LR)
