Sydney’s 2014 Chinese New Year Festival, running from the 24th January to the 9th February, is set to be the biggest in our 18-year history, with over 80 events scheduled. Fashion designer Claudia Chan Shaw, one of the City of Sydney’s festival ambassadors, says: “For us, Chinese New Year has always been about getting together and sharing wonderful food with family and friends.” She urges you to get “involved with the Lunar Feast where Sydney restaurants serve up set-priced meals during the Festival.” You’ll find 29 of Sydney’s hottest Asian restaurants dishing up cheap and delicious set-price meals in celebration of the Lunar New Year.
One of my favourite spots, Chefs Gallery, will be celebrating the Year of the Horse with a 6-course ‘chapas’ banquet for $38/head (minimum 4 people). Diners will receive dishes inspiring good luck, good wealth and good health, including seaweed salad with black vinegar, sesame and chilli oil, and Peking duck. Owner Kaisern Ching says his special menu is sure to bring you luck and good things in what he thinks will be “an energetic year – a year to act fast and follow your instincts.” He’ll also be keeping his master noodle maker “working hard and fast for the festival to ensure his handmade noodles bring long life.”
Chui Lee Luk, who recently opened Chow Bar & Eating House is presenting her own $60/head lunar banquet. She is also one of the festival’s official ambassadors, explaining: “2013 was full of new and exciting ventures that allowed me to explore and share my Chinese heritage. I am excited to continue this personally and culturally enriching journey in 2014 and welcome everyone to join in the city’s celebrations with me.”
You’ll also find noted Sydney pastry chef Anna Polyviou taking the Shangri-La Hotel’s Lobby Lounge in a new direction by developing a special Chinese New Year High Tea for $42/head. I hear it includes a matcha green tea macaron with toasted pandan marshmallow… Kung Hei Fat Choy!
