Bill posters beware

The City of Sydney wants to prosecute companies that engage in illegal advertising rather than individual bill posters, and will request the state government to change the relevant legislation, pending a feasibility review.

Bill postering, common on light and telegraph poles around the inner city, is typically commissioned by commercial businesses or contract agencies.

But under current legislation it is the person who physically erects the advertisement that runs the risk of being charged. Penalties are between $330 and $400.

Councillor Jenny Green passed a motion on Monday to review whether shifting the liability to businesses is possible.

“It’s time to finally address the currently flawed legislation to determine liability and management processes,” she said.

The City of Sydney reported a 97 per cent increase in illegal bill postering in 2012/13.
