Grand designs for future Circular Quay

Reconnecting Circular Quay to the city, improving public access to the harbour and creating more open spaces around the foreshore were on the ‘to do’ list at yesterday’s  Zunz Lecture. The ‘Re-imagining the City’s gateway’ event was aimed at stimulating high-quality public dialogue on the future of the city. This year’s event marked the end of the month-long Sydney Opera House 40th birthday celebrations. The City of Sydney’s Sustainable Sydney 2030 vision proposes removing the Cahill Expressway to improve access and views to the water, as well as renewing the public square in front of Customs House with more space.

Blooming marvellous plant giveaway

The City of Sydney will spread colour across the city next weekend when it gives away thousands of beautiful blooms and plants in support of the White Ribbon Foundation. Plants and flowers from the City’s eight-week Living Colour display will be distributed on Sunday 3 November, with 30,000 pots on offer in exchange for a gold coin donation. Lord Mayor Clover Moore encouraged everyone to come along and pick up a free splash of colour to take home and nurture. “Our beautiful Living Colour display has brought inner city streets to life over the past few months, and now it’s time to find these blooms new homes,” she said. White Ribbon Australia is the charity partner of Living Colour 2013 and is dedicated to preventing male violence against women.

Waverley Council looks for cool ways to save energy

Waverley Council is encouraging a fridge buyback scheme for its residents. Old fridges and upright freezers are some of the biggest energy users in the home, costing around $300 a year to run. Waverley and Randwick Councils are supporting the Fridge Buyback program, which operates under NSW Government Energy Savings Scheme, and is targeting operational fridges built before 1996 and 200 litres or greater in size. “Waverley residents are very environmentally aware, taking up many cost saving initiatives for a more sustainable future,” Waverley Mayor Sally Betts said. Residents can go to www.fridgebuyback.com.au or call 1800 708 401 to check eligibility and make a booking for a fridge to be collected for recycling.
