This year, The Idea Of North, an Australian a cappella four-piece, celebrate their 20th year singing sonorous harmonies together and Smile is as good a celebration as any.
The title track is angelically precise, Mas Que Nada is equally nuanced as well as impossible to avoid grooving to.
Despite a basic background beat, vocals are the focus with bass singer Andrew Piper most often responsible for The Idea Of North’s impressive vocal percussion.
The group utilise the malleability of a cappella to traverse genres effortlessly – latin, jazz, soul, gospel, pop – and in doing so, The Idea of North prove they can master virtually any style. (KD)
