The Pyrmont Community Centre will be hosting an Open Weekend to celebrate its refurbishment and new seven-day-a-week operations.

From Friday, September  27 to Sunday, September 29 the centre will be abuzz with activities to mark the improvements and attract new patrons.

Friends of Pyrmont Convenor Mary Mortimer believes the celebration will highlight the centre’s importance to the community.

“It is the only public space [of its kind] in Pyrmont. There is no school or church hall so it is a very important space, and our residents and staff have been working hard to make it available for different sections of the community,” she said.

The Pyrmont Community Centre provides opportunities for fitness, recreation and much-needed services for children such as playgroups, after-school care and holiday care.

Regular attendee Jillian Dardick praised the centre for its role as a vibrant community hub.

“I moved here three-and-a half years ago and there was nothing except for gym classes… now the activities help get people together and it has become a place for the people,” said Mrs Dardick.

The Open Weekend will begin at 6pm on Friday with an exhibition of photographs illustrating the theme of ‘Why I Like Pyrmont’ while the Pyrmont Sings! and Pyrmont Players groups entertain the crowds.

From 10am to 4pm on Saturday, centre activities will include Pyrmont Sings!, a pottery display, and quieter pursuits such as a book exchange, Scrabble, chess, stitching and table tennis.

The Pyrmont History Group will also host exhibitions of photographs, artefacts and stories from Pyrmont’s extraordinary past, while the famous free Pyrmont Community Bank sausage sizzle will begin at midday.

Finally, on Sunday the centre will celebrate Family Day to show off their facilities to parents and children.

These include the children’s choir, kids’ karate, ballet, soccer, music and movement, playgroup and again, a Pyrmont Community Bank sausage sizzle.
