ROCK, PAPER, SCISSORS

Screening as part of the 8th Sydney Latin American Film Festival, Rock, Paper, Scissors (Venezuela) is one of the standout films of this year’s program, not least for its outstanding cinematography.

The story unfolds over one day in Caracas – one of the murder capitals of the world.

When an affluent father and his son walk into a diner, their fates become irrevocably tied to that of a young woman employed there. A domestic crisis leads the father to briefly leave his son in her care and it’s in this careless and ill-timed moment of separation the boy becomes inextricably drawn into a catastrophic turn of events.

The girl and boy hail from opposite ends of the track and as their tragedy unfolds, we witness the wider story of the pervasiveness of crime in a world of social inequality and economic extremes.

This gritty, social drama is not for the faint of heart, but it’s as enlightening as it is entertaining. (RF)
