Tom Stoppard’s hilarious masterpiece, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead is making audiences laugh at Sydney Theatre Company for a limited season.

Fans of the famous Bard and Stoppard alike will enjoy this tale of two hapless messengers, trying to make sense of their interactions with other characters in a no-man’s land – all while the events of Shakespeare’s Hamlet unfold somewhere offstage.

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead stars Tim Minchin (Jesus Christ Superstar: Live Arena Tour), Toby Schmitz (Crownies, Paper Giants: The Birth of Cleo) and a cast of Australia’s most acclaimed thespians including Heather Mitchell and Christopher Stollery in comically dramatic roles.

Schmitz steals the show as the flustered and bored Guildenstern in the throes of an endlessly existential crisis and Minchin is wonderful as Rosencrantz, giving a subtle, sometimes clueless but spot-on performance.

A thoroughly enjoyable but despairing play – after all the audience knows how it all must end. (LL)
