Shipton to speak at Balmain dinner

WikiLeaks Party Secretary John Shipton will the keynote speaker at an upcoming dinner in the Inner West. Mr Shipton, the biological father of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, will speak on Saturday, July 27 about the prospects for the WikiLeaks Party in the coming federal election. Socialist Alliance spokesperson Pip Hinman said the recent revelations of US whistleblower Ed Snowden had strengthened public support for WikiLeaks. “There is widespread concern with governments which act in our name, without our agreement or support,” she said. Creative plan for Glebe viaducts

The historic viaducts in Jubilee Park, Glebe could soon be home to musicians, sporting clubs or creative collectives, with applications now open for the City of Sydney’s latest round of accommodation grants. The viaducts are one of five places for which the City  is currently seeking expressions of interest from creative residents, the others being Benledi House, Glebe; Erskineville Town Hall; 247-257 Bulwara Road, Ultimo; and 107 Redfern Street, Redfern. Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore said: “Our accommodation grants program puts empty spaces across the City to good use, helping organisations provide important cultural, social and educational services for the community.”

PARK(ing) Day support in Leichhardt

PARK(ing) Day, an annual one day event that transforms metered car parking spaces into temporary public places, is to be supported at the next Leichhardt Municipal Council meeting, on Tuesday, July 23. Leichhardt Councillor Daniel Kogoy will move a Notion of Motion at the meeting calling on Council to support the 2013 Sydney PARK(ing) Day, which will occur on Friday, September 20. Mr Kogoy said he would recommend that “Council notify Sydney PARK(ing) Day of its support for the event and collaborate with interested residents, local businesses, organisations, community groups, artists and activists to hold a PARK(ing) Day event(s) in the Leichhardt Municipality”.
