TWISTED FAIRYTALES BURLESQUE

“I’m going to burlesquify Goldielocks,” says Sheena Miss Demeanor, who aside from being a wordsmith is also one of Australia’s foremost burlesque artists.

“Well [burlesque] it’s actually a French word, and it means parody, to mock, to make fun of is the direct translation. So it’s like we would use the words ‘to ham it up.’”

There’s clearly more to her performance than a saucy strip tease. “You have to be able to connect with people, so I think it’s nice to be able to create a storyline that makes people think. It doesn’t always have to be really obvious. I think when storylines are really obvious it’s not really that clever. You have to have a little bit more irony to captivate an audience.

“How I go about it I guess, I look into the topic quite extensively and think ‘what would be the funniest thing that would happen in this scenario?’”

So how does this relate to a famous children’s fairytale?

“I think my Goldielocks will be a bit controversial,” muses Miss Demeanor. (LC)
