BOXMAN

Ringo is a former child soldier who left Africa to find refuge in Melbourne. Now he lives in a park in Footscray and his home is a cardboard box.

This new Australian work starring Terry Yeboah is the brainchild of prolific writer/director duo Daniel Keene and Matt Scholten.

“There’s an integrity about the writing and something very human about it that appealed to me,” Scholten says.

The one-man-show premiered at the Big West festival in 2011 and was met with critical acclaim. As well as being selected for the VCE syllabus it was shortlisted for the Victorian Premier’s Literary Award.

Even though Scholten has described the play as powerful, brave and compelling there is a wry humour running throughout the text.

“The character rises above all the tragedy in his life by keeping a sense of humour. It’s a story about someone who is still very much connected to the events of his childhood.”

“It tells a lot of truths and has connected really strongly with the audience,” Scholten continues. “We all understand pain, loss and being a child. People really identify with this character, even though we probably haven’t had his experiences.” (ES)
