BETWEEN TWO WAVES

BETWEEN TWO WAVES

Climate Scientist Daniel Wells (Ian Meadows) is frustrated by many things. His computer containing years of research is ruined in a flood. He can’t move on from a tragic childhood incident. His anxiety is getting in the way of having a family with the love of his life. And to top it all off, he knows the world is going to end – soon – and no one else seems to care.

Where most plays peak and fall with waves (pardon the pun), this 100-minute show continues to snowball with gripping tension. Meadows, who also wrote this political drama, shines as Daniel. He manages to make insecurity and pessimism endearing, especially in scenes with his outspoken and vibrant girlfriend Fiona, played by the lovely Ash Ricardo.

There’s a lot going on in this political drama and a few sub-plots go unresolved. While audiences are putting together pieces of the puzzles, they are treated to elaborate sets including projections, red lights and gushing water from the ceiling. Director Sam Strong effortlessly balances the smoke and mirrors with complex but absorbing uses of flashbacks.

Strong’s last show at Griffin is an ideal farewell. This play feels fresh and relevant without being preachy.
