LIVE WIRE – Sydney Live Music Guide August 30th

This Thursday August 30th Melbourne six piece Alpine will be launching their aptly titled debut album A Is For Alpine at the Oxford Art Factory. The album is a collection of indie-pop numbers characterised by head-nodding beats, crispy guitarwork and the angelic vocals of dual front women Phoebe Baker and Lou James. Tickets to the first show sold out in a hurry so best be quick if you wanna get along to this one. Alpine will be supported by Melbourne’s Clubfeet and Perth’s Georgi Kay. Over at the Annandale Hotel, singer-songwriting guru Josh Pyke will be headlining the Annandale Hotel’s annual Busking For Change event which raises funds for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. Proceeds from the limited tickets to the event go towards improving the opportunities of indigenous Australians living in remote areas and Josh is sure to put in an extra special performance for this.

On Friday August 31st You Am I frontman Tim Rogers will be launching his latest album Rogers Sings Rogerstein at the Factory Theatre. The Aussie music stalwart has been making great music for over 20 years now and the latest album is another testament to his ability for writing great music. Rogers will be supported by roots singer-songwriter Catherine Britt whose 5th studio album Always Never Enough was released just weeks ago as well. There’s a special event on for the basslovers out there when OuterBass returns to the Gladstone Hotel. Abstract Now will be celebrating the launch of his debut EP on So Much Future Records titled Brooklyn Zoo- and the night will be a huge mixture of bass music that is sure to get your insides vibrating and your booty shaking. The night also features John Deville, Clockwerk and B.O.O.M.A. Alternatively, there’s a fascinating event on at The Hi-Fi when Finnish string quartet Apocalyptica visits Sydney to deliver their unique brand of metal music. No other group does it like they do as the classically trained cellists play- with frightening brutality- a style of music traditionally known for guitar shredding and distortion. The group’s most recent album 7th Symphony features contributions from members of Slayer, Gojira and Bush and is a seriously ferocious record. Apocalyptica are supported by Rise Of Avernus.

On Saturday Sept 1st Sydney psychedelic shoegaze kids The Laurels continue their national tour in support of their debut album Plains when they play at the Annandale Hotel. Initially gaining attention for their incredible live performances, the group have managed to capture that energy and commit it to tape as Plains is alive with colourful deluges of guitar effects and crashing drums. The group’s popularity has been on the rise since their album release so this show at the ‘Dale- alongside Witch Hats and East River– is going to be pretty huge.
