LIVE WIRE – Sydney Live Music Guide August 16th

This Thursday August 16th Melbourne’s self-proclaimed ‘neo folk pop’ singer/songwritert will be performing at Goodgod Small Club in honour of her latest single Stop Pulling The String which appears on her upcoming debut LP You Go Your Way, I’ll Go Mine. This follows the first single Fighting Kind which was released back in April to much excitement and enthusiasm from local music press. She’ll be supported by Caitlin Park and Brendan Maclean.

On Friday August 17th there is an amazing bill featuring three unique and innovative bands. Sydney’s Jinja Safari have developed a sound, blending African inspired rhythms with folk and pop; Kiwi psychedelic pop three piece Opossum features The Mint Chicks singer Kody Neilson, and their DIY home recorded album Electric Hawaii has been highly praised by music press; while Los Angeles group White Arrows have been building hype around their incredible live performances and electric new single Roll Forever. This is shaping up to be a huge event and it takes place at the Metro Theatre. Over at the Lansdowne you can catch another great local group Good Heavens– a power trio comprised of theredsunband singer/guitarist Sarah Kelly and ex-Wolfmother members Chris Ross and Myles Heskett. The group’s debut album Strange Dreams is a place where dream-pop meets rock’n’roll delivered with the brutal intensity normally reserved for groups with way more band members. They’re supported by Bloods.

On Tuesday August 21st Australia’s own drumming prodigy Virgil Donati is returning to our shores from his adopted US home to play some dates with his rock/fusion band OTV. Donati took up drumming at the age of two and has openly confessed his passion for playing and creating music is so deep he pretty much has no social life. That commitment though has led him to become one of the most sought after drummers in the world. This gig is taking place at The Basement.

Finally, on Wednesday August 22nd, hip-hop heads will be rejoicing when South Central LA’s The Pharcyde returns to Australia to celebrate 20 years of the group’s existence. One of the more innovative rap groups that came to the fore alongside De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest, The Pharcyde are best known for tunes like Runnin’, Passin’ Me By and the single Drop. This party is going down at the Beresford and will also feature a set from Los Angeles native Computer Jay.
