LIVE WIRE – Sydney Live Music Guide August 10th
This Friday August 10th Sydney’s greatest musical mischief-makers Bluejuice are embarking on a 13 date university tour to promote their latest album Company! and their home town show will take place at the UTS Glasshouse. The group fronted my pranksters Jake and Stav have been wowing audiences with their electric stage shows and general madcap behaviour for the last 10 years and on this night they’ll be joined by good friends Deep Sea Arcade and Preachers. Just up the road, one of the leading pioneers of the mashup movement Z-Trip will be spinning at The Metro. The outstanding DJ has worked with hip-hop greats such as LL Cool J, Chuck D and Chali 2na amongst so many others and his live sets are so filled with brain busting turntable wizardry that they are nothing short of mind-blowing.
On Saturday August 11th there’s an event that is shaping up to be too difficult to miss; Sydney’s finest reggae band King Tide will be strutting their stuff at the Annandale Hotel along with a massive lineup that’ll include Lime Cordiale, The Widowbirds and up-and-comers Callithump. Notorious for their incredible live performances and consistently a crowd favourite, King Tide are a bonafide rebel-roots-reggae-music sensation so you can’t go wrong checking this one out. Across town, young Melbournian indie-popsters Snakadaktal are embarking on a tour to celebrate the release of their latest single The Dance Bear. After winning Triple J’s Unearthed competition in 2011 with their single Chimera they embarked on a whirlwind tour of the east coast to bask in their new found glory with more than satisfied audiences. This time around they’ll be performing at The Metro and you can catch them alongside the equally ambitious and amazing Sydney band Sures. Over at the Basement, Sydney roots collective The Strides will be paying tribute to the music and genius of Fela Kuti. The Nigerian saxophone player is universally considered to be the father of afrobeat, a musical movement that combines African rhythms and singing over the uncut funk of the 70s that was popularised by James Brown. Fela Kuti was also a fierce political activist that championed the voice of Africa to be freed from poverty, disease and colonialism. Be sure that there will be some powerful music on offer at this show.
On Wednesday August 15th early-90s American RnB sensation Bell Biv DeVoe will be making a welcome comeback to Australian shores when they perform at the Enmore Theatre. Folks will remember that they burned up the charts with hits like Poison and Gangsta alongside the likes of Boys 2 Men and Jodeci- boy bands that could really sing- and their recent reunion performances over the last year or so have shown that they can still dance and hit those really high notes. They’re supported by fellow RnB stalwart Ginuwine.
