LIVE WIRE – Sydney Live Music Guide July 19th
This Thursday July 19th Rainbow Chan and Outerwaves are launching a split 7″ vinyl at FBi Social on a night that will showcase two innovative, up-and-coming Aussie producers who are promising big things. Sydney’s Rainbow Chan’s music is a beautiful collage of glitchy electronic beats, acoustic instruments and the lady’s delicate voice, while Brisbane’s Outerwaves produces incredible soundscapes over groovy hip-hop beats.
On Friday July 20th Aussie punk fans can rejoice as probably the most motley crew of musicians Sydney has probably ever spawned – Frenzal Rhomb – will be taking over the Manning Bar. Known for catchy up-tempo tunes with creative titles such as Punch In the Face and There’s Your Dad along with their raucous live performances, it’ll no doubt be an insane night so don’t complain if your beer gets spilt at this gig. On the opposite end of the spectrum you can head to the Basement to see iconic Australian singer Renée Geyer. The much sought after singer has been a staple in jazz, blues and soul circles since the early 70s and has been privileged enough to sing backing vox for Sting, Chaka Khan and Joe Cocker. She’s just as comfortable being the front-woman though and she’ll be showcasing her best work on the night.
On Saturday July 21st Dave Graney & The MistLY will be launching their latest album You’ve Been In My Mind over at Notes. The eccentric and boundary pushing Graney has been in the music business for over thirty years now, with humble beginnings in his home town Mount Gambier to fronting a string of innovative groups such as The Moodists, Coral Snakes and The White Buffaloes as well as collaborating with a who’s who list of Australian music talent. The latest album is a trip through 70s rock and soul and is a very rewarding listen. Over at the Vanguard you can experience an intimate show with local folk-reggae group Jesse Morris & the 3 Beans as they play material from their most recent album titled Stepping Over You.
On Wednesday July 25th Jim Ward will be making up for the show he cancelled earlier in the year after the death of a friend forced him to return home from the tour. The guitarist and founding member of reunited post-hardcore group At The Drive-In will be playing material from his solo album Quiet In The Valley, On The Shores The End Begins at the Annandale Hotel. Elsewhere on the night, feel good American indie-pop band The Shins will be playing at the Hordern Pavilion to showcase tunes form their latest album Port of Morrow. The band has been around for over 15 years and are so endeared to Australian audiences that their last album featured a song named Australia. Their latest offering has received more than favourable reviews and this promises to be an amazing event.
