Community centre coming to Leichhardt

A multi-purpose community centre will be built in Leichhardt within the
financial year, with Council announcing the move in their 2012-13 budget. The $2 million community centre will be built in Marion St, in close proximity to Leichhardt Town Hall.

Mayor Rochelle Porteous said the community centre would cater to many different demographics in the community. She said: “We want to see the community centre used for youth programs because we don’t have a Police and Community Youth Center (PCYC) in Leichhardt, [but] we have ones in Glebe and Balmain.

“We would also be looking at how to deliver for seniors, in terms of
learning and activities for them. We will be looking at delivering events and learning for parents of young children.

“Potentially it would also be used for exhibitions; for example art exhibitions and for general community uses. It would be a place for local groups to meet and run their activities.”

The community consultation process for the centre commences in August.
Also in the budget are plans for three new sporting fields at Callan
Park. The $13.6 million Callan Park revamp program includes two parks
on Glover Street Oval, set to be ready for the 2012 summer season, as well as one on Balmain Road Oval for the 2013 winter season.

Mayor Porteous said: “The new sporting fields at Callan Park and the
new Leichhardt community centre are excellent additions to community
facilities that will be used by many.”
