LIVE WIRE – Sydney Live Music Guide June 7th

This Thursday June 7th you can catch the stirring music of south coast raised troubadour Steve Smyth. Armed with just his dusty acoustic guitar and a voice which ranges from sickly sweet to rugged and rousing, the lusciously bearded performer pens the sweetest songs of love and all things related. Smyth is a truly mesmerising performer and what better place to experience him than at the Vanguard.

On Friday June 8th, young singer and electronic producer Elizabeth Rose will be playing a show in honour of Ready, the first single from her forthcoming EP. Rose’s music is hypnotic, catchy, ethereal and boundary pushing, with sophisticated pop sensibilities; pretty good for someone that’s just blown out 21 candles on their last birthday cake. Rose is going to be one to watch over the next few years and you can get a preview of what she’s capable of at The Standard. Melbourne’s Delta Riggs will be playing the Sydney leg of their run of East Coast capitals at FBi Social to celebrate their third EP release Talupo Mountain Music Vol II. The ferocious five-piece have nailed a rock and roll sound teeming with late 1960s rebellion inspired by groups such as The Clash and Iggy & The Stooges and they’ve been impressing audiences with their performances at Pyramid Rock Festival, Big Day Out and Festival of the Sun. They’re supported by Myth & Tropics and Penelope. Over at the Oxford Art Factory Aussie audiovisual and DJing extraordinaire Sampology will be kicking of his national tour in support of his debut album Doomsday Deluxe. The new album is a montage of samples, breaks and beats and he’ll be demonstrating the visual component of his show live which is a melange of television, movie and other oddball imagery.

On Saturday June 9th, local sensations Excellent Robot will be bringing their comic book imagery laden indie-pop to the Sandringham Hotel. The group’s songs feature masterful hooks, interweaving guitar melodies and synth badness backed by a powerful rhythm section. They’ll be joined on the night by eccentric trio Dreamboats and Death Mattel.

On Sunday June 10th, there’s a massive night of music on at the Oxford Art Factory with experimental jazz group The Robert Glasper Experiment. The fleet-fingered Robert Glasper is a virtuosic piano player who just so happens to love hip-hop and R&B so he’s melded together those styles with jazz on his latest album Black Radio, which features contributions by Erykah Badu, Bilal and Yassin Bey (the artist formerly known as Mos Def). The group will be joined on the night by soul/R&B singer Jose James and the beat-boxing son of Bobby McFerrin: Taylor McFerrin.

Finally on Tuesday June 12th, in case you missed him recently, Canadian blues guitarist and singer Harry Manx will be playing music from his latest album Strictly Whatever which fuses traditional blues and folk music with classical Indian rhythms.
