LIVE WIRE – Sydney Live Music Guide June 21st

This Thursday June 21st you can catch former Leonardo’s Bride singer Abby Dobson at Camelot Lounge. Known for the Leonardo’s Bride single Even When I’m Sleeping, which was selected by APRA as one of the top 30 Australian songs of all time, the stirring singer-songwriter has been toiling away with various projects including writing music for a new American film as well as a Broadway musical but she’ll be taking some time to perform an intimate show that will likely include material from her much lauded solo album Rise Up. On the same night, spread across several venues (The Standard, Oxford Art Factory, The Beresford and Phoenix Bar) there will be a fundraising night for Beyond Blue: an organisation dedicated to raising awareness of and preventing depression. The huge line-up of over 20 acts that are lending support to the cause are Blue Juice, Ball Park Music, Lior, Bob Evans, Hungry Kids of Hungary and so many more than there’s room to list here.

On Friday June 22nd, Aussie funk and soul greats The Bamboos will be playing the Sydney leg of their Medicine Man national tour at the Metro Theatre. Medicine Man is regarded as the group’s most accomplished album to date and features a host of national and international guest artists such as Tim Rogers, Daniel Merriweather, Aloe Blacc and Megan Washington. The Bamboos are also one of the country’s best live acts with their tight uncut funk chops and their inviting stage presence. They’re supported by Axolotl. Over at the Basement, French-Irish chanteuse Camille O’Sullivan is returning to Australia after previously selling out a whopping 13 shows at the Sydney Opera House Studio. She’ll perform an intimate show that will feature her radical interpretations of music by Nick Cave, Tom Waits, David Bowie and heaps of others.

On Saturday June 23rd, Ash Grunwald will be launching his latest album Trouble’s Door at the Metro Theatre. The pensive singer-songwriter has written perhaps his most personal album which is a canvas for his thoughts on the changing nature of the world and the optimism he sees in humans embracing the digital age. All this to his trademark blues and roots style. He’s supported by Fingers Malone Ensemble. Just around the corner, Good God Small Club will receive Alphamama for a special Destiny’s Child tribute night. Alphamama and her all-girl soul/R&B group will be playing two sets on the night; the first of which will feature their own original music while the second will feature nothing but the music of Destiny’s Child, Beyonce, Kelly Roland and Michelle Williams. Not a night to miss if you like your music dripping with soul and “Bootylicious”.

Finally on Monday June 25th, you get the opportunity to experience a set of intricately woven songs by Canadian born and locally based singer-songwriting extraordinaire Brian Campeau. Not only does Campeau write some of the most delicate and moving songs, he’s got some mean guitar licks and what better place to check him out than within the intimate confines of 505.
