Rozelle embraces the arts

A conglomeration of creative schools and galleries have backed Rozelle’s new precinct to help nurture the growing contemporary art scene.

The Rozelle Contemporary Arts precinct (RCAP) launched in March and combines the forces of Sydney College of the Arts at the University of Sydney (SCA), dLux Media Arts, Artereal Gallery and Paper Plane Gallery.

Current exhibitions are part of Head On Photo Festival 2012.

Sydney-based artists Ella Condon and Lucas Davidson collaborated to deliver ‘Between Us’ which concludes its monthlong run at Paper Plane Gallery on Sunday.

Ms Condon said: “[It] has been an exciting experience to push our work to new levels.”

Both artists delve into concepts of temporality, transformation and impermanence with their collection of ten photographs, one installation and two video pieces.

Ms Condon and Mr Davidson are pursuing their Master of Fine Art at SCA and ‘Between Us’ is their first collaborative exhibition.

The exhibition’s catalogue essayist Anne Ferran described the central concepts.

“These artists are interested not so much in blur as a visual device or aesthetic strategy but in blur as a metaphor for time’s infinite capacity to transform itself from one state (stillness) to another (motion) and back again.”

Ms Condon and Mr Davidson will participate in an open artist talk about their artwork on Saturday, May 26 at 3pm in the Paper Plane Gallery.

“We encourage people to come along and share a drink with us on the last weekend of the exhibition, and have a conversation with us about our work,” Ms Condon said.

Other exhibitions in the RCAP include Liam Benson’s ‘Motherland’ which will continue until early June at Artereal Gallery.

The collection explores social and political views on identity, nationhood and masculinity.

Artereal Gallery is also showcasing the new works of Rebecca Beardman until June 2.

The recipient of The Freemantle Print Prize in 2010 presents an exhibit that plays with ideas of reflection and immateriality.

Liz Miller and Brett Smout’s exhibition is showing at the SCA Gallery as is a preview of works by German photographer Sibylle Bergemann.

SCA with The Goethe-Institut Australien present this preview which is open to the public until June 8.

A more extensive collection will be showcased in August.
