LIVE WIRE – Sydney Live Music Guide May 10th

This Thursday May 10th, UK indie-rock group The Maccabees will be playing at the Metro Theatre following the hype of British music mag NME calling them “the best young guitar band in Britain.” While it may be too early to say whether they’ll soar to the heights reached by other young British rockers Arctic Monkeys, they certainly entertain with their clever indie post-punk and some impressive guitar work. Hailing from Belgium, dEUS are visiting Australia for the first time in their 20-plus year history together. The group have been plugging away with their versatile guitar driven rock, which has earned them the admiration of REM’s Michael Stipe, Muse’s Matt Bellamy and Elbow’s Guy Garvey (who also sang on dEUS’ 2008 release Vantage Point). Catch this mob at the Manning Bar. Also that night at 505, local collective Conscious Pilots will be playing their smooth, suave and funky fusion of jazz and hip-hop. The group features double bass, turntables, horn section and of course, some free flowing hip-hop rhymes.

On Friday May 11th, one of the most notorious hip-hop acts to walk the earth – Public Enemy – are returning to Australia to play the upcoming Groovin’ The Moo festival and they’re playing a Sydney sideshow at the Metro Theatre. Known for politically-charged lyrics, obnoxious stage antics and the absurd nature of clock and bling bearing member Flava Flav, they’ve been causing mischief since 1982 and it’s a real privilege to have them back on our shores. Over at the Oxford Art Factory, local hip-hop troublemakers Daily Meds will be celebrating the launch of their debut album Happy Daze. The first single Dance is a stomping, simmering, wobbling beast with a call to get on down and shake your booty and there’ll be plenty of booty-shaking on the night with support from The Herd’s Ozi Battla and more. Melbourne garage punk group The Peep Temple are bringing their wild and adrenaline-charged mayhem to the depths of Goodgod Small Club in honour of the recent release of their debut self-titled LP. The abrasive and skewed guitar playing is backed by a punch packing rhythm section and manic vocal delivery that’ll surely send punters into a writhing frenzy. They’re supported by The Fighting League and Yes I’m Leaving.

Saturday May 12th, one-time singer of UK punk group Million Dead, Frank Turner has fashioned a pretty successful career from now playing heartfelt folk tunes with an acoustic guitar and his merry band The Sleeping Souls. Turner is making waves for his rousing live shows and his positive music and he’s supported on the night by WIlliam Elliot Whitmore, The Smith Street Band and Jen Buxton.

Sunday May 13th, Melbourne electronic pop trio Planet Love Sound have returned to Australia after spending time in Berlin impressing the likes of Holy F#@k and Warpaint. The intriguing group combines lush electronic soundscapes with fragile pop melodies and powerful rhythms to create a moving form of dark pop-music. They’ll be promoting the recent release of the single My Shadow from their latest EP at FBi Social alongside 1929Indian and Jason & The Lyrebirds.
