LIVE WIRE – Sydney Live Music Guide April 5th

On Thursday April 5th there’s an extra special treat for music lovers as one of the most amazing Australian singers of the moment returns from Paris to play an intimate show at 505. Inga Liljestrom will be playing acoustic versions of her songs and material from her latest album Black Crow Jane, which reviewers are referring to as a defining moment in her career. At Good God Small Club, psychedelic rock outfit Wolf & Cub will be playing a show to celebrate the recent release of their double A-side singles See The Light and All Through The Night. These singles have got their trademarked dubbed out guitars and eery vocals and are a welcome return for the Adelaidean indie trio.

Saturday April 7th is a big night of Blues & Roots Festival sideshows. At the Enmore Theatre, legendary UK group The Specials will be playing their brand of politically charged revivalist ska/rocksteady music. They’ve been a voice for frustrated English youth since they released their first single in 1981 until now, where after the social upheaval recently seen in England they are still considered as relevant as ever. The collaboration between members of the American punk/ska group Sublime and singer guitarist Rome Ramirez: Sublime with Rome are playing their Blues & Roots Fest sideshow at the UNSW Roundhouse. Their debut album Yours Truly is a tribute to the life of Sublime lead singer Bradley Nowell who passed away in 1996, essentially ending the life of group. Their show set lists consist of new material as well as old Sublime classics. Also in town playing a Blues & Roots Fest sideshow are the British group Alabama 3 who are known probably most famously for providing the opening theme song Woke Up This Morning for the television show ‘The Sopranos’. Their sound is a blend of rock, dance, country, blues and gospel and they’re playing at Manning Bar. Over at the Oxford Arts Factory, there’s a whole host of international and local live dubstep and future beat crews playing a night of heavy dancefloor music. Names such as Jacques Greene (Canada), Africa Hitech, Machinedrum (UK), Dibiase (USA), Albatross as well as a whole host of DJs will be tearing it up all night while across town at Camelot Lounge, respected Ethopian singer Dereb The Ambassador and his electric seven piece band are playing their brand of folk, funk and afro-beat.

On Sunday April 8th, folk, country and blues singer/guitarist Steve Earle is also in town doing a Blues & Roots Fest sideshow at the Factory Theatre. Earle is renowned not just for his beautiful songs but for his political activism where he consistently draws light on a number of social issues. A very unique and important voice and he’ll be supported by Suze DeMarchi & David Leslie (formerly of Baby Animals) and Lachlan Bryan.
