LIVE WIRE – Live Sydney Music Guide March 8th

Thursday March 8th, France based singer-songwriter Tété is playing a show at FBi Social and it’ll be a wonderful opportunity to catch a truly rare and unique artist. His soulful vocals are smooth as butter and his upbeat delta-folk pop is sure to inspire anyone that gets along to catch this purveyor of a truly global sound. Supports on the night are local indie-dream-pop group Hey Big Aki and Brett Winterford. Across town another unique blues-folk talent – Eric Bibb – will be playing at the Basement. Brought up surrounded by musical pedigree he was given advice by Bob Dylan as a child to, “Keep it simple, forget all that fancy stuff” and taking that advice, Bibb has written some of the most uplifting acoustic blues for the last 40 years. Steeped in delta blues and gospel Bibb’s music is truly powerful stuff.

On Friday March 9th at the Annandale Hotel you can catch a mega hip-hop double feature when Diafrix and Joelistics celebrate the launch of their respective new singles: Running It and The Shining. Both acts are coming off a great 2011 with Diafrix securing massive national tour slots as well as being privileged enough to perform at the UK’s Glastonbury Festival while Joelistics released his debut album Voyager to critical acclaim. From local boy to global sensation, Sam Sparro is making a return to his home town to perform his post-disco dance pop at the Oxford Arts Factory. It’s been four years since he released the runaway hit single Black and Gold and fortunately for us he’s returning with a new album in the works; from which he’s surely going to preview some new tracks. Local retro indie-pop sensation Fabergettes launch their EP over at Good God Small Club. They’ve got sass and style and the almost all girl group (they’ve got a boy drummer) play some very catchy numbers characterised by shimmery reverb drenched guitars and head bopping drums led by front-girl Nat Martin’s 60s inspired vocals.

On Saturday March 10th, Ben Corbett of Six Ft Hick explores the romantic and tortured soul within with his project Gentle Ben & His Sensitive Side when he plays at the Vanguard. Last year’s successful album release Magnetic Island really was a foray into human emotion but although it showcases the sensitive elements within Corbett’s psyche his vocals stretch from croons to falsetto to howls within moments and he’s still backed up some some of the most ragged and dirty rock & roll grooves.

On Monday March 12th, for some fleet fingered jazz business, get over to 505 and catch an earful of the James Muller Trio featuring Steve Barry. There’ll be a flurry of notes from Muller and Barry on guitar and piano respectively while the formidable rhythm section of Brett Hirst and Tim Firth on bass and drums is sure to keep your mind boggled the whole night.
