LIVE WIRE – Sydney Live Music Guide 23rd February

This Thursday 23rd February indie-electronica artist Elizabeth Rose is gearing up for a fine year ahead and is launching her new single Ready at Goodgod Small Club. Her music is atmospherically beautiful and the depth of her sound and vocal delivery belies her youth as the lass is only just 21 years of age! An upstart to keep an eye out for. Kiwi hip-hop group The Kumpnee have made the cross Tasman trek to settle in our fair harbour city and they’ve been making a name for themselves with their blend of soulful urban grooves and R&B stylings. It’s the stuff that lovers can get down to and it’s on at The Factory Theatre.

On Friday 24th February Ghanaian born afro beat exponent Afro Moses is playing at Camelot. How he and his band manage to pack so much energy into a show is beyond me. His shows are such high energy affairs that even James Brown back in his heyday would struggle to keep up. Mayer Hawthorne is the story of a scrawny white-boy hip-hop producer who wrote and sang a few revivalist 60s soul tunes for fun and ended up attracting the attention of  Stones Throw Records head honcho Peanut Butter Wolf. The product is a sharp dressed falsetto crooner who blends influences from the Motown and Stax Records era with J Dilla style hip-hop beats. That’s on at The Metro Theatre.

On Saturday 25th February four piece local outfit Zimzalabim are bringing the funk to The Hampshire Hotel. Consisting of members from Good Buddha and Space Invadas they play extended sprawling funk jams, infused with re-imagined soul classics and hip-hop gems. Adelaide six piece Fire! Santa Rosa Fire! combine sweet melodic boy-girl vocals with synths, pointy guitar leads and a rumbling rhythm section to produce seductively infectious indie pop numbers. They’ve been heaped with praise due to their stunning live performances which they’ve just recently translated to a fresh new album. Supports on the night are Sures and 1929indian and it’s at Goodgod Small Club. Fans are finally rejoicing as Glaswegian electronic hip-hop sensation Hudson Mohawke is returning to our shores to play at The Manning Bar after having to cancel shows last year due to a broken leg. This young prodigious turntable talent cum electronic producer – who counts Flying Lotus as a fan – has released a series of EPs, mixtapes and the album Butter which offer a cauldron of breakneck beats, soulful vocals and heavy synth barrages.

The Soundwave alternative/metal show is in town this week and it brings with it a bagful of great sideshows. On Monday 27th eight piece demolition crew Slipknot are in town with their trademark horror masks and jumpsuits. They’ll be tearing up the Sydney Entertainment Centre while on Wednesday 29th you can catch the most shocking of shock-rockers Marilyn Manson at the Enmore Theatre whose show has as many props and costume changes as Lady Gaga but with more torment and and anti-social proselytising.
