LIVE WIRE – Sydney Live Music Guide 1st March

Thursday March 1st, Japanese hip-hop guru DJ Krush is embarking on a 20th anniversary world tour and on the Sydney leg he’s playing Upstairs at The Beresford. Krush loves it here and Sydney loves him in return as he continues to sell out venues whenever he visits playing his brand of soulful atmospheric beats. He’ll be supported by Tigermoth, Bentley and Ability. Melbourne based singer-piano player Monique Di Mattina is touring to promote her album Welcome Stranger which is a great blend of New Orleans blues, jazz and stride music with lyrics that not only feature her wonderful voice but also her humorous wit and charm. The single Livingest Place slyly plays upon the traditional rivalry between Sydney and Melbourne, but the argument will obviously be put to rest once she gets here. She’s playing at 505.

Friday March 2nd, you can catch one of Australia’s most accomplished jazz musicians James Morrison. The multi instrumentalist – most renowned for his trumpet playing – has worked with Dizzy Gillespie, Wynton Marsalis, Frank Sinatra and so many more of the world’s best and you can enjoy his playing within the intimate confines of the Basement. Across town, British musician/producer Bonobo will be playing in Australia for the first time and he’ll be accompanied by his live six piece electronic band and soul vocalist Andreya Triana. He creates some of the most innovative and soulful beat music out there and Sydneysiders can take the unique chance to appreciate it at the Metro Theatre. He’s supported by locals Guerre and Oliver Tank. At Oxford Arts Factory cassette king Ariel Pink will be bringing his unique psychedelic strange-pop. His sound is a combination of old cassette samples, shrill 70s synths and beats made either conventionally with his mouth or unconventionally with his arm pits. He’ll be touring with his band Haunted Graffiti and their shows together have been getting rave reviews.

Sunday March 4th, rock n roll delinquents from Atlanta USA Black Lips are bringing their raucous live show to the Annandale Hotel. They’ve got a punk/ country/rock n roll sound with sandpaper guitars and punk vocals that bellow about anarchy and good old fashion mischief. They’ve also got a stage show that incorporates vomiting, urination and fireworks so you might wanna get along to this with a raincoat. Supports are Circle Pit and Bed Wettin Bad Boys.

Last but not least on Wednesday March 7th, New Zealand’s coolest and catchiest indie group The Checks are playing at the Beach Rd Hotel. They write powerful indie-pop with growling guitars, a grooving rhythm section and pretty melodic vocals. They’ve almost finished their first LP so you should check them out (no pun intended) before Australia lays claims to yet another talented Kiwi act. They’re supported by The Delta Riggs and The Walking Who.
