LIVE WIRE – Sydney Music Guide Dec 29th

Thursday 29th December sees Sydney-based, New Zealand-bred live hip hop band The Kumpnee playing at the Annandale Hotel. They’re headlining a long night of hip music which also features Empire Rising, Blue Candy, The Yellow Canvas and The Tremors. LA based singer songwriter Hanni El Khatib is in Australia to tour his debut album Will The Guns Come Out. Stylistically the album crosses musical genres such as skater rock, blues and doo-whop and the man’s own description of his music is ‘knife fight music’. He’ll be playing at FBi Social. Western Australian alternative rock veterans Jebediah are playing in honour of their new single She’s Like A Comet. The single has been racing through the charts like a comet too and after spending much of 2011 touring through regional centres Sydney can look forward to seeing them at Selina’s. On Friday 30th December UK turntable virtuosos Tony Vegas and Prime Cuts of the Scratch Perverts are playing at the Oxfrod Arts Factory. These guys are known for their devastating scratching abilities as well as their explosive track selections. They’ll be joined by Frenzie, Naiki and MK1. At the Basement, one of Australia’s most beloved soul singers Renee Geyer will be playing a selection of music from her extraordinary career. She’s been the backing vocalist for such renowned artists as Sting, Chaka Khan, Toni Childs and Joe Cocker but this ARIA hall of fame inductee is more than just a backup singer and has been one of the greatest exponents of jazz, soul and R&B in this country. Saturaday 31st December it’s so difficult to pick the best gigs on new years eve however here’s a few to get worked up for. The Vanguard is hosting a NYE Masked Ball featuring blues rock group The Snowdroppers, Kira Piru & The Bruise, Brothers Grim and The Blue Murders. The Basement is hosting one of Sydney’s finest blues bands The Mick Hart Experience and they’ll be playing, in its entirety, the legendary Jimi Hendrix album Are You Experienced along with a whole host of other Hendrix numbers. Goodgod Small Club is hosting a raucous night of rock n’ roll to bring in the new year. The night will be headlined by one of the most heart stopping up and comers on the Sydney scene Royal Headache. Their self titled debut album has been garnering rave reviews and their live performances are nothing short of electric. They’re supported by DJ King Opp of the Straight Arrows and Shantan Wantan Ichiban and a host of others. Drum n bass legend LTJ Bukem is playing at the Chinese Laundry and this is bound to be a sweaty night of dancefloor mayhem right in the heart of the city. He’ll be joined by Dutch superstar DJ duo Mightyfools as well as a whole host of local support that can’t be counted on two hands.
