LIVE WIRE – Sydney Live Music Guide Dec 1st

Hooray for the first weekend of summer and it’s chock full of great live music both local and from overseas. Starting on Thursday December 1st veteran Melbourne indie-garage pop trio Love Of Diagrams are playing at FBi Social. Their gangy punk vocals are punctuated by razor sharp guitar leads that soar over punchy baselines and frenetic drum patterns. They’re supported by The Laurels– who have finally just released their debut EP Mesozic, Circle Pit and Go Genre Everything (Melb). At The Vanguard you can witness one of Sydney’s perennial organ/keys session musos step out and launch his first solo album. Lachy Doley has played for Powderfinger, Good Buddha and Jimmy Barnes and his personal style will see him play rock, funk and soul. He’s supported by The Widowbirds and Mindy & The Serpents. On Friday December 2nd seminal eighties Kiwi legends Mi-Sex will be returning to stage almost 20 years after the tragic passing of their original singer Steve Gilpin. They were renowned for their eighties pop-punk synth sound and I bet there isn’t anyone that can’t vividly remember the chorus to their classic hit Computer Games. Their return, this time fronted by Steve Balbi of Noiseworks, will surely be a rocking reunion. Catch it at The Basement. For the beatheads out there Gas Lamp Killer will be bringing his nasty brand of turntablism to the Oxford Arts Factory. He’s pretty relentless when it comes to rocking dancefloors as he plays a variety of styles from head banging hip-hop to crank to bad-ass dubstep. On Saturday December 3rd west coaster Felicity Groom will be playing at The Beresford. Her dark folk music is dreamy, wonderfully crafted and has been winning her admirers everywhere that she and her debut EP Treasures have touched down. It’ll be a beautifully mesmerising show. For all the true punk fans out there The Manning Bar will be hosting a special treat. The Casualties are making their debut tour to Australia and they’ll be bringing with them their clanging and raucous street punk show. There’ll be lots of yelling, kicking and mayhem so head on down if you fancy a bit of chaotic fun. Supports by Topnovil and The Rumjacks. On Sunday December 4th a highly unusual band will be playing a highly unusual show at the Annandale. Excellent Robot are a local indie pop outfit with a twist- they are a puppet band. The psychedelic-pop-puppet-six-piece consists of a slime creature on bass, a robot drummer, a feline guitarist and a superhero singer. It’s weird and wonderful and totally unbelievable. They’ll be supported by The Fabergettes and The Dreamboats. Over at Camelot you can catch some local singer sonwriting talent when Alison Avron plays some tunes from her latest EP Wrong Notes & Anecdotes. She’ll be joined by one of Brisbane’s leading jazz singers Lauren Lucille who’ll be performing tracks from her upcoming album as well as her solo live EP.
