LIVE WIRE – Sydney Live Music Guide 17th Nov

This Thursday 17th nine-piece rhythm and blues group Clairy Browne And The Bangin’ Rackettes are celebrating the release of their debut album Baby Caught The Bus. It’s been two years in the making but it’s been worth the wait as this all girl group’s slinky soul sound is chock full of doo-wops, motown slow jams and vintage sounds. They’re riding the same Motown revivalist wave that saw people fawn over Amy Winehouse and Sharon Jones. Supports by Kira Puru & The Bruise and The Atom Bombs. At Good God Small Club local garage rock-power trio Step Panther will be cranking out numbers from their recently released debut self-titled album. If you haven’t seen them yet they are one of the most energising rock acts to come out in Sydney for a while and they’re known for their relentless live shows. They’re supported by Dune Rats and Pear Shape. Over at 505 The Strides will be playing and you’ll be sure to get your groove on to their brand of afrobeat, reggae and dancehall. On Friday 18th Kiwi reggae veterans Katchafire are bringing their feel good sunshine reggae vibes to The Beach Road Hotel. They’ll be playing tracks off their recently released album On The Road Again and will no doubt get you grooving on the dancefloor to their impeccable vocal harmonies, skanking guitars and dubbed out drums. Over at FBi Social you can catch a truly unique talent in Brouse. It’s difficult to find the words to describe her but she’s sultry, seductive and hauntingly beautiful. Prepare to be mesmerised. She’ll be supported by Paul Capsis and Domeyko/Gonzales. Saturday 19th sees Jamainan reggae stalwarts The Congos will be playing at The Manning Bar. They’ve been playing conscious roots reggae music for over 30 years have worked with the legendary Lee Perry, the biggest name in Jamaican reggae production. Their sound has stood the test of time and it’s a real privilege to have them visit our fair shores. Laneous & The Family Yah are bringing their eclectic indie capers to FBi Social. Their sound ranges from being twinkly and ethereal to dancehall to straight-up indie pop but either way they’re irresistibly loveable and their set will be made up of the trio of EPs they’ve released this year aptly titled Scissors, Paper and Rock. They’re supported by The Rescue Ships and Master of Ribongia. At The Vanguard, Grinspoon frontman Phil Jamieson will be playing a rare solo show. It’ll be an amazing opportunity to catch an intimate acoustic show by a troubled yet inspired veteran of Australian music. Support is by St Cecilia. At The Basement, US soul, funk veterans The Dynamites will be playing their brand of smooth southern soul. Featuring the soaring vocal stylings of the one and only Charles Walker they’ll be sure to set the night alight! At Notes Live Mikelangelo And The Black Sea Gentlemen will be celebrating ten years of their brooding gypsy rock. The last time they played Notes their music and performance took every audience member on a journey into a dark gypsy world of sinister intrigue and shenanigans and their return there should largely herald a return of the same.
