Students relax at the end of maths

More than 50 000 stressed students finally found time to wipe their sweaty brows and relax last week after completing a mathematic marathon.
The HSC is currently underway and many students are revelling after the end of both the English and mathematics sections of the exams.
St. Andrews School Captain and HSC student Charlotte Gulliver, found her mathematics exam went better than expected.
“I was worried about maths, but it actually went quite well! I feel a lot of relief, I’m glad it’s over.
“Studying at school made it easier, as there was a lot of focus on exams. It can be hard to stay focused when you’re not in the classroom environment so I really have to spend my time wisely.”
“My exams are going quite well. Our teachers have been a great support, assisting us with past papers until the last minute,” said St. Andrews student Daniel Morkel.
“I feel extremely relieved as each exam finishes!”
Another St. Andrews Student, Joseph Chang said: “I have been studying for about 6 hours each day.”
“I’ve found the exams quite easy – it’s not as scary as everyone says. Independent study has been the best way for me to learn.”
55,103 students sat for General, Extension and 2 unit Mathematics on October 24, 25 and 26.
Maths has the largest enrollment after English, which is the only compulsory subject in the HSC.
“Even though maths is not a compulsory HSC course, it remains one of the most popular,” said the chief executive of the Board of Studies NSW, Carol Taylor.
“The Mathematics course provides students with the opportunity to develop an understanding of high level maths that is needed for university studies in areas such as life sciences, finance, technology and education.”
“The HSC is a major investment in the future of New South Wales,” said Minister for Education, Adrian Picolli.
“While the HSC remains a vital introduction to university studies, it has now evolved into a world class credential that encourages students to explore a wide range of subjects that suit their interests, abilities, and potential career paths.”
A record 72,391 students enrolled in the HSC this year to sit for at least one of 117 different exams in more than 760 exam centres.
The Higher School Certificate runs until November 11.
